Indoor 5G connectivity

As part of the SLICES project, 5G connectivity dots have been deployed throughout the Torres Quevedo building at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. This technology enables ultra-fast speeds, minimal latency, and increased network capacity, greatly improving the overall wireless experience for everyone in the building, including students, faculty, and staff.

Scope

  • Provide radio coverage inside the laboratories of the Telematics Department at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, located in the Quevedo building on the Leganés campus.
  • The objective is to supply the equipment and installation and integration services necessary to deploy the radio solution integrated with the 5G Core network of 5TONIC.
  • Review the E-band radio link between IMDEA Networks and the UC3M campus in Leganés, including its activation if the current state of the hardware and installation permits.

Solution

  • Radio solution for the coverage area shown in the figure, based on coverage simulation and modeling.
  • The connection to the 5G Core network of 5TONIC will be via a 10 GbE link, which is assumed to be existing.
  • The equipment we propose is compatible with the spectrum assigned to Telefónica in the N78 band (3500-3600 MHz).
  • A bandwidth of 40 MHz is assumed.
  • The kit located at UC3M consists of a baseband 6621, which receives the GPS signal with its antenna on the building’s rooftop. It also includes an IRU 8848, responsible for providing connectivity to the dots via PoE, and four dots 4479, which will be responsible for broadcasting 5G.
